Jennifer Lopez is in an otherworldly role in the upcoming sci-fi thriller Atlas, co-starring Sterling K. Brown and Simu Liu.
Extra’s Mona Kosar Abdi spoke with the three about their experience making the film.
Lopez said, “It was comfortable, it was easy, it was fun. It’s always such a joy for me to work with really great actors, so it was a lot of fun. I had a really good time with these guys. They’re great.”
Sim interjected, “I remember the first time, we were literally…Jen was in a 20-foot-tall mech suit, and she was just kind of wrapped up in it, and I said, ‘How are you doing?’ And you said, ‘I’ve been here for seven weeks.’”
“I’m a one-man show,” Jen laughed.
In the film, Jennifer Lopez plays a government analyst who battles robot warriors with the help of AI.
Jen had to replay a number of scenes in which her character was flying off into space alone. “I was in a box with a green screen behind me and I wasn’t talking to anybody,” Jen explained.
“I was nervous,” Jennifer admitted. “I thought I’d be on my own, and I’d be doing the takes really fast, and I wouldn’t have to worry about anybody else not remembering their lines. I mean, it’s just me, you know what that means? So I’m on set, and on the first day they’re like, ‘We’re going through a planet!’ Like, crazy. I’m like, ‘My legs are broken!’ I was so nervous every day, and I didn’t have any actors to give me half the energy, and I had to do it on my own, and it was exhausting. I was so exhausted. I was limping off the set of Atlas at times.”
Sterling K. Brown, in particular Amazing We won’t give away any spoilers, but he commented on the scene: “I had to talk to my eye doctor, and they helped me out.”
Although Lopez wasn’t able to see the scene, Brown was thrilled, calling it “an incredible moment in film history.”
Simu plays an AI terrorist and said he enjoyed bringing the evil character to life.
He said, “Playing Harlan was a lot of fun.” Sim also joked, “I can’t imagine myself being in a situation where I would want to kill Jen. I think that was the biggest acting thing I’ve had to do…Obviously, she’s so lovable and amazing, why would you want to do that?”
“Atlas” is currently streaming on Netflix.
