OpenAI has launched an advanced voice mode for voice chat with ChatGPT.

OpenAI said on Tuesday that its popular chatbot is now offering advanced voice capabilities for premium subscribers, a tool that makes conversations smoother.

The rollout will continue throughout this week. The company says it’s not yet available in the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland, or the UK.

OpenAI announced the new feature in May, and it garnered a lot of attention thanks to a voice called Sky that sounded similar to Scarlett Johansson from the 2013 film “Her.” Lawyers representing Johansson wrote OpenAI a letter claiming the company didn’t have the rights to use the nearly identical voice, and OpenAI stopped using it in its products, CNBC reported.

In the months since, users have been able to set ChatGPT to speak to you using other voices in the free version, while the advanced version responds faster and stops to listen when you interrupt. Currently, there are nine voices to choose from, and you can enter your voice chat instructions in the customization section of the app settings.

Open the ChatGPT app.

OpenAI says you’ll get a notification in the app when access to the new features is enabled, so just hit the continue button to get started.

Create a new chat by swiping right or tapping the two-line icon in the top-left corner and selecting ChatGPT at the top. To the right of the “Message” text field and microphone icon, you’ll see a sound wave icon. Tap on it to make sure sound is on.

After a few seconds, you’ll hear a small “ding” and the circle in the center of the screen will turn into a flowing, sky-like blue and white animation. Start talking. You should hear a response shortly. Don’t be surprised if there are some stutters in the audio.

OpenAI says it has improved some foreign accents and increased the speed of conversations, but if you don’t like what you’re hearing, you can ask ChatGPT to speak differently — for example, tell it to speak faster or adopt a southern accent.

With advanced voice modes, you can have ChatGPT read you a bedtime story, help you prepare for a job interview, or work on improving your foreign language skills.

But even if you pay, you don’t get unlimited access to the advanced voice modes. After about 30 minutes of use on Tuesday, the bottom of the screen started displaying “15 minutes remaining.”

OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request for details about the deadline.
