The 12-hour toy drive helped organizers get closer to their goal of 100,000 toys, but there’s still a lot to do and plenty of time to help.
Houston — this weekend, 44th Annual Christmas Eve Super Feast will be held at the George R. Brown Convention Center. For the first time in 40 years, the organizers were faced with what they called an “emergency”. A record number of families are in need of help and their children don’t have enough toys.
Organizers organized an emergency toy drive on Monday.
of super feast It typically serves 20,000 to 25,000 people each year, but more than 30,000 are expected to need help this year, thanks to higher gas prices and inflation.
“It happened. The phone kept ringing while we were talking.” city wide club Stephanie Lewis said. “You never know what will happen because the freeze is approaching.”
So the organizers called for help.
“Houston always responds when they know there’s a challenge,” Lewis said.
And Houston did what Houston does. People from Houston came by all day long with toys, new bikes and bags of canned food. And some of the people who came to help knew exactly how much it meant.
“Just getting involved in giving and putting a smile on a little boy or girl’s face is a big deal,” said Ona Maria Anderson.
Christmas wishes are 100,000 toys.
“Our goal is for every child who participates to get two new toys,” Lewis said. “For thousands of people who will be the only gift of the year.”
They’re still working on their final toy count, but they’re well on their way to making this year’s Super Feast the best yet.
“I have to admit this morning, I was a little worried, but Houston got over it,” Lewis said.
The good news is that the organizers said they’ve made a big dent in their needs, but there’s still time to help.
