Four in five homeowners consider their homes an extension of their own; According to new research.
A survey of 2,000 American homeowners surveyed respondents’ attachment to their homes, revealing that 78% view their home as part of them.
Millennial homeowners were most likely to agree with the idea, at 88%.
Results also showed that 35% of respondents argued that there is no aspect of their home that changes when given the opportunity.
Talker Research System Paperthe survey investigated the homes that respondents loved very much. We’ve delved into purchasing priorities.
Respondents were given a variety of features and were asked which one was the most prioritized when they first purchased the house.
At the top of the list of desired factors, 33% of respondents who chose house style as one of their top priorities said that it was the first thing they considered, but area was the top pick of 29% who prioritized it when viewing.

Another 23% of people looking for a backyard said it is the most important feature when purchasing a home.
For those with external elements such as backyards, porches, 60% said they would spend as much time as possible in those external areas.
Millennials were most likely to agree. 82% of millennials surveyed said they spend as much time as possible in their home’s outdoor space, compared to 56% of baby boomers.
Not only that, millennials were the most likely generation to want more external space in their homes, compared to 32% of boomers surveyed and 61%.
“What we’re looking at, especially with millennial homeowners, is focusing on transforming outdoor areas into fantastic entertainment spaces,” said Cassi Hallam, Chief Marketing Officer at System Pavers. “It’s not just adding value to the home, it’s about creating a place where they can really relax and enjoy their time with friends and family. They prioritize having a dedicated outdoor space that reflects their personal style and makes everyday life a little more special.”
The backyard is the most preferred outdoor area (70%), followed by the garden (69%), the front yard (61%) and the deck (61%).
Frontyards and gardens are most likely to be voted as “pride” of respondents’ homes (87% each).
When asked most about using outdoor spaces, relaxation was my first choice with a margin of 51%. The second option, gardening, was selected by 17% of respondents.
The respondent also said, “I sit in the backyard while my dog enjoys being outside,” and “I enjoy visiting my children and grandchildren and playing in the garden.”
Another respondent said, “I enjoy all the outdoor areas, but I enjoy my garden the most because of what it returns.”
27% Miss Outdoor Time when the weather is bad
If the weather was bad and respondents were unable to spend time outside, 27% said they “missed a lot of that.”
Additionally, 63% of respondents with external space agreed. It is compared to the first moment when you can go outside in your yard after bad weather.

Whether it’s a cozy covered patio with gatherings all year round, a fun, fun outdoor kitchen, or a turf area that allows for less time-consuming outdoor kitchens, or a turf area that allows for more time-consuming less work, our goal is to design spaces that bring people closer.
Research method:
The Talker survey looked at 2,000 homeowners. The investigation was commissioned by System Paper Managed and implemented online by Talker Research March 10th to 14th, 2025.
