It only takes one week to turn your year around, and 29-year-old Australian Cam Davis proved that by winning his second career PGA Tour title on Sunday at the Rocket Mortgage Classic after finishing no worse than 12th in 16 starts in 2024.
Davis birdied the 18th hole and shot a final-round 70 for an 18-under 270 total for the week at Detroit Golf Club, winning by one stroke over Davis Thompson, Ming Woo Lee, Aaron Lai and Akshay Bhatia.
“I’m a completely different person today than I was a few weeks ago,” Davis said after the round, fighting back tears. “I don’t want anyone to go through what happened with Akshay. I’ve worked a lot to get myself out of a tight spot and all of a sudden… I’m in a much better place.”
In fact, Davis’ luck was helped by a late stumble from Bhatia, who could have won at 19 under with a 28-foot putt for birdie on the 18th hole, but Bhatia left the putt 4 feet, 3 inches short. Then he pulled the putt for par, his first three-putt of the week and cost him a chance to win in a playoff.
Davis won with Rocket Mortgage in 2021, becoming the tournament’s first two-time winner. In the process, he won $1.65 million in prize money out of a total prize pool of $9.2 million.
