The main event of UFC 284 is highly anticipated. Despite all of Volkanovski’s achievements at the featherweight division, it’s generally accepted that he’ll be quite the underdog against Makachev, who is currently on an upward trajectory.
The fight was almost officially scheduled to take place shortly after Makachev secured the UFC Lightweight Championship. The Dagestan genius ended the fight by easily knocking Charles Oliveira to the ground and submitting him in the main event UFC 280 To win the vacant gold belt. Shortly after, Khabib Nurmagomedov invited Volkanovsky to the cage and had a fight with Makachev.
Cejudo agrees with the idea that “The Great” should be seen as the underdog. On the other hand, he wasn’t convinced by Daniel Cormier’s claim that Volkanovski’s victory would be the most shocking outcome in UFC history. In a recent video uploaded to his channel, Volkanovski highlighted his chances of becoming double his champion.
During the course of the video, Henry Cejudo was questioned about the chances of “The Great” becoming the most decorated double champion in UFC history if he defeated Makhachev. He hints at the possibility, but for that he needs to keep his defense intact. Only Amanda Nunes in UFC history has successfully defended both belts while holding both at the same time.
“he [Volkanovski] I think we’ll have to keep it and he’ll win [Conor] McGregor, he’ll beat Nunes and he’ll beat Cormier,” Cejudo opined.
“The only reason I say Nunes is because there is no ranking at 145 pounds…yeah I think that puts him [Volkanovski] See who I beat, next to me: Demetrius [Johnson]TJ [Dillashaw]Dominique [Cruz]I beat 3 Hall of Famers on my way to becoming a Double Champion. ”
The end of Cruz’s reign
Henry Cejudo’s reign as double champion came to an end after defeating Dominic Cruz at UFC 241 in May 2020. Cruz’s victory was his only successful bantamweight title defense. After stepping up to bantamweight, he never tried to defend the flyweight title again.
Over the past few years, “Triple C” has issued many challenges to Alexander Volkanovski for a fight for the featherweight championship. However, for the time being, it looks like Cejudo will return to bantamweight level instead.
After defeating Islam Makachev, do you think Alexander Volkanovsky will become a great two-division champion?
