Lulu Roman, a longtime regular on the country comedy variety series Hee Haw, passed away Wednesday in Bellingham, Washington. She was 78 years old.
Her son, Damon Roman, confirmed her death thr.
She was born in Dallas on May 6, 1946 in Bertha Luise Hubble and grew up in an orphanage.
She struggled with her weight, but it was a result of thyroid problems, and ultimately performed as a teenager as “the world’s biggest go-go dancer.”
As a performer during her hippie days, she became friends with the country legend Buck Owens, who assured her when “Hee Haw” took part in the production in 1969. Florida WeeklyShe said, “They told him the type of character they were looking for: gorgeous blonde, one gorgeous brunette, one boy next door type, one girl next door type, one fat, one stupid guy, one fat woman.
Of course, the real reason he felt she was perfect was her quick wit.
She excelled in the show, but was forced to leave after being convicted of drugs in the early ’70s and returned in 1973 after becoming a reborn Christian.
Turning the new leaf over, Roman sang on the show and began his career as a gospel musician, which began with his first album in 1974.

Roman was an inductee to the 1999 Country Gospel Music Hall of Fame, and in 2019 he wrote, “This is my story.”
She acted in the film “Corky” (1972), helping to pinpoint the spinoff series “Hee Haw Honeys” (1978-1979), and was a guest on shows such as “The Love Boat” (1983) and “Touched by an Angel” (2001).
Roman was distinguished by appearing in over 150 episodes of “Hee Haw,” including the first and last episodes in 1969 and 1993.
She survived by her son and was preceded in death by her son Justin, who died in 2017.
