Tiger shark swims dangerously near bathers
Twice in a week, authorities had to close Mullaloo Beach in Perth, Western Australia on Monday 9 January after a tiger shark was spotted swimming near the shore. Check out this video shot from a drone.
A 16-year-old girl was killed by a shark while swimming in Australia’s Swan River.
“A woman was injured after being bitten by a shark of an unknown species at around 3:35 pm on February 4, 2023,” the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) said of the incident.
“DPIRD is coordinating the response with WA police and local authorities. DPIRD fishing vessels are monitoring the area on the water and DPIRD personnel are patrolling on land.”
The girl, whose name has not been released, was jet skiing with friends when she spotted a pod of dolphins and tried to swim with them, ABC News (Australia) reported. Instead, she found a shark biting her leg.

Paramedics rushed to the scene but were unable to save the girl with a severe leg injury. The type of shark and the full extent of the girl’s injuries were not reported.

This is the only other confirmed fatal attack on January 31, 1923, and the first river death in a century.
Fremantle District Lieutenant Paul Robinson said, “I won’t go into the extent of the injuries because it was such a traumatic event for everyone involved and everyone who knew the girl,” describing the incident as “tragic.” ” he expressed.

“It’s unusual for sharks to be so far down rivers,” he continued. “At this point, a shark warning was issued just to let people know that this incident had occurred.”

Robinson also said the girl’s family was reportedly away at the time but was “completely devastated” after receiving reports.

According to News.com.au, authorities have urged the public to “exercise extra caution on the Swan River in the North Fremantle region.”
