There are new details surrounding the death of Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa.
The couple was found dead last week at a Santa Fe home with one of their dogs.
Now, the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office says the New Mexico gas company has not found any major gas leaks in Jean and Betsy’s homes.
According to a press release, “The New Mexico gas company confirmed that it conducted extensive investigations of gas leaks and carbon monoxide at Gene Hackman’s home on the evening of February 26, 2025. No significant findings were found.”
The release continues. “NMGC issued five red tags. One red tag was for a small leak (not a fatal amount, but 0.33% gas in the air) in one of the stove burners. The other four red tags were gas leaks and code enforcement violations containing carbon monoxide, including a water heater and gas logwriter installed in three fireplaces.”

Meanwhile, at a press conference on Friday, Sheriff Adan Mendoza told reporters: The attitude and cause of death have not been determined. Official results of the autopsy and toxicology report are pending. ”
He added: “I spoke with Dr. Jarrell, a pathologist at the New Mexico office of medical researchers. She revealed to me the following information, both individuals tested negative for carbon monoxide. The first interrogation of Mr. Hackman’s pacemaker was conducted, which revealed that his last event was recorded on February 17, 2025.

TMZ Report Mendoza also noted that there were no surveillance cameras in the facilities or homes to assist with the investigation.
Furthermore, USA TODAY is now I’ll check The deceased dog, an Australian Kelpee Mix, was found to be trapped in a kennel. Given that genes and Betsy may have died more than a week before the body was discovered, the dog may have died from a lack of food and water.
