news: Foxtel Group and Fox Entertainment have signed an agreement which will see the two companies discover and develop new screen programming for the Australian and US markets.
context: The joint venture will see the two Murdoch-controlled companies jointly commission programming to be distributed on Foxtel’s Binge streaming platform as well as licensed to third-party services in the United States and other markets.
Projects commissioned under the agreement will be produced at Fox Entertainment Studios in Australia with local and U.S. crews. Fox Entertainment Global will oversee sales for programming produced under the agreement.
The deal, the first between the two companies, comes as a deal between Foxtel and Warner Bros. Discovery for the rights to HBO’s hit shows “Succession” and “Euphoria” approaches its deadline ahead of the planned direct-to-consumer launch in Australia next year.
The deal comes as the Australian government prepares to introduce new content quotas that will require streaming platforms to invest minimum amounts in domestic drama production.
Here is what they said: “Investing in strategic content partnerships such as this one with Fox Entertainment reflects our desire to bring a global mindset to local production while telling Australian stories around the world,” Foxtel executive director of entertainment and content Alison Herbert-Burns said in a statement on Tuesday.
“Together we are exploring new ways to bring more content domestically and deliver popular Australian content to Foxtel and Binge audiences, as well as to our international partners.”
