The home meal index rose 0.4% during January, up slightly from a 0.2% increase in December. Four of the six major grocery store food group indices rose over the month, with the cereals and bakery products index gaining the most at +1.0%.
Other major grocery store group price changes include:
- Other food at home: +0.7% (+0.4% in December)
- Meat, poultry, fish and eggs: +0.7% (+1.0% in December)
- Soft drinks: +0.4% (+0.1% in December)
- Dairy products, etc.: No change (-0.3% in December)
- Fruits and vegetables: -0.5% (-0.6% in December)
The home meal index has increased by 11.3% over the past year. Cereals and bakery products showed the biggest increase in his 15.6%. Price increases for other groups ranged from 7.2% (fruits and vegetables) to 14.0% (dairy and related products).

The food away from home index rose 0.6% in January, following a 0.4% gain in December. The index for limited-service meals rose 0.7% after rising 0.5% in December, while the index for full-service meals rose 0.5% after rising 0.1%.
