This week, politicians, journalists, and academics pretend to support free speech while simultaneously trying to restrict what billions of people can say on the internet.
They should call it Hypocrisy Week. It will be more accurate and fit into the heading a little more easily.

The left and its traditional media allies want to use the government to attack online free speech that is not theirs. They hate masks. and. A. Passion. “Hate speech” has always been an umbrella term for leftists, encompassing everything they dislike. This allows the far left to criminalize anything they don’t like. So the next time Waltz spread his arms wide in game show cosplay, someone shoved a copy of the Constitution into his hand.
His potential boss, Vice President Kamala Harris, along with President Biden, pushed hard to control speech on the coronavirus. As Musk tweeted, “Censorship is happening all over America.” It’s not just America. The left cannot function alone. Politicians have promoted Orwellian control of speech in other countries as well. And other EU member states continue to talk about targeting Mr. Musk as well.
Then there’s Brazil, where Mr. Musk has been openly fighting a war to prevent government control of his site. But that battle appears to be over for now. The Washington Post reported that “Elon Musk was the first to blink, bowing to pressure to restart X in Brazil.” He is reportedly blocking the content as requested by a Brazilian judge. Social media companies are no more powerful than nations.
This leaves U.S. social media sites at risk of censorship both domestically and internationally. Without us even realizing it, the entire online world could be run by the left, like Banned Book Week.

Before you say that’s not that bad, understand that this is just propaganda pretending to support “freedom to seek and express ideas.” Insofar as those ideas promote the far left, especially young children. The organization’s website lists the “Top 10 Most Challenged Books of 2023”. This includes the highly controversial books “Gender Queer” and “This Book Is Gay,” as well as eight other books, all of which have been objected to by parents for their “sexually explicit content.” .
That is the kind of speech that the left defends. This is not a conservative idea. Applying that strategy to the Internet, the only protected speech would come from the left. Similar to what happened before Elon Musk took over Twitter.
