A San Francisco woman was seriously injured Monday night when she was hit by a hit-and-run driver and pinned under a self-driving cruise car.
San Francisco Police Department told CNBC that officers responded to a hit-and-run incident at the intersection of Fifth Street and Market Street around 9:30 p.m. The force of the impact threw the pedestrian in front of the Cruze, which applied its brakes “aggressively” and remained at the scene at the request of police, according to a Cruz spokesperson and San Francisco police.
Police said they rendered aid to the woman at the scene before medics transported her to the hospital.
“We are deeply concerned for the safety of the injured and are actively working with law enforcement to identify the responsible driver,” a Cruise spokesperson told CNBC. There were no passengers in the cruise vehicle.
Police had no witnesses as of Tuesday morning. NBC Bay Area reported that the cruise car had numerous cameras installed inside and outside the vehicle, which captured most of the incident. CNBC reviewed video of the incident, which shows both the Cruze and the hit-and-run vehicle driving down Fifth Avenue.

The hit-and-run driver struck a pedestrian as both vehicles were crossing Market Street. Pedestrians did not appear to be using marked crosswalks. The woman was thrown across the hit-and-run vehicle and into the right lane where a Cruze vehicle was traveling.The cruise ship stopped immediately After the impact. NBC Bay Area reported that a woman was trapped under the left rear axle of the vehicle, forcing the San Francisco Fire Department to use the “jaws of life” to extricate her.
First responders told NBC Bay Area that the woman suffered multiple trauma injuries and was taken to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. San Francisco police said the pedestrian’s condition is unknown.
Cruise is a subsidiary of general motors The company has been testing driverless vehicles across San Francisco since August. The company has drawn scrutiny from first responders and the public for several incidents involving traffic jams and delays. along with the alphabet-Subsidiary Waymo, Cruise is one of the few US companies testing autonomous driving.
