Advance tipping on DoorDash is a hot topic, and both drivers and customers have very strong opinions on the issue.
The overwhelming majority of customers who don’t tip in advance rarely tip after the fact, and many delivery drivers claim they’ll never take an order without a tip.
On the other hand, some customers say they won’t tip until their order is properly received.
TikToker Jessica Golich (@jessicagolich) recently went viral after posting about DoorDash news, which is sure to stir up even more ripples in the larger “to tip or not to tip” debate.

In the video, Golich shows off several screenshots that appear to be from the DoorDash application, which warns customers that their order may be delayed if they don’t add a tip to their order.
She says in the video: “DoorDash has a built-in warning that delivery may take longer if you don’t tip. This is the warning that stops you and asks if you want to add a tip. What do you think, guys?”
The Verge They reported seeing that they received the same message when they tried to order without tipping in advance, and wrote that the following copy popped up in their application if they didn’t tip: Do you want to continue? Dasher can choose the orders he wants to execute. The longer it takes for Dasher to accept your order, the more likely your delivery will be delayed. ”
CBS Money Watch We spoke to a representative from DoorDash, who confirmed that the popular food delivery service is testing messaging in its app. They said the company’s decision to do so was made to improve the user experience for both customers and delivery drivers. “This reminder screen is something we are currently testing to provide the best possible experience for all members of our community,” they said.
The move comes after a flurry of negative complaints from drivers about orders without tips, as well as customers allegedly witnessing piles of meals going unallocated to delivery drivers because they didn’t add a tip in advance. It is possible that this is being spurred by customers who are
Many drivers have repeated the delivery driving chorus of “no tips, no rides.” But a familiar debate unfolded in the comments section of Golic’s video.
Some users said that the idea of tipping before the food arrives is nonsense, as the tip depends on the quality of service received. One person wrote: “It should be the norm to tip only after the food is delivered.”
Another person wrote: “Tip afterwards. Why tip before the service is provided?”
One TikToker joked that her food never arrived on time, even though she tipped in advance when ordering, writing, “Even though I tip, it still comes late.”
The person claimed that DoorDash would increase the tip amount if it gave up a larger portion of the order. “If DoorDash hadn’t charged me $10 in fees, I would have tipped more,” they said, a sentiment echoed by another TikToker who said, “Why don’t drivers deliver when they deliver?” Don’t you get paid?” he wrote. ”
For some, the end-user experience of ordering food through DoorDash wasn’t worth it. “Honestly, that’s why I stopped ordering from DoorDash. Too many times the food arrived cold and the refund only gave him 20% back,” another user wrote .
Some viewers argued that tipping on orders is no longer for a job well done, but rather a form of auction. “It’s no longer a tip; it’s a bidding war with other orders,” they said.
