(WHTM) – If you’re rushing to get your holiday shopping done this week, be careful.
Some last minute sales online or in overstocked stores may turn out to be fake.
Unless it’s fake junk, there’s nothing like a new electronic device under the tree on Christmas morning.
That’s what happened to Lindsay Knollman and her mother, Penny, when they thought they had found the perfect holiday gift. You can get brand new Her Apple Air pods for just $45 at the overstock outlet.
“She’s like $45, usually over $200,” Penny said. “I said, ‘Is this real?’ He said, ‘Yes, it’s never been opened.’
However, when Lindsey tried it on at home, it didn’t fit.
“I thought it wasn’t really Apple quality because the music would pause or randomly cut out,” Lindsay said.
She realized that she had been deceived.
“There are too many signs that they’re not real,” Linsday said.
In it, the word California was misspelled and the sound quality was terrible.
They were buying fakes!
Sometimes it’s easy to spot counterfeit products, such as Apple Airpods that don’t have the Apple logo and just say Air 2.
It can also be much more difficult, like when these Samsung earphones have all the right logos.
“When you open the box, the first thing you see is this box…”
Eric Giselman, a U.S. customs official, told ABC27 a few months ago that counterfeit goods often fall apart or are dangerous. “That could pose some safety risks.”
For example, Apple’s counterfeit chargers have been blamed for causing several fires. Therefore, if you are not sure about the retailer, it may be a good idea to use a pass.
“It’s not who they are and it’s not fair to people,” Penny said.
Bottom line: Be suspicious if the price of an item is too low. Don’t waste your money as it may be fake.
