The UAE is known for many things: skyscrapers, luxury goods, oil and, of course, heat. The country’s summer temperatures can soar above 50°C, making it feel like you’re living in an oven. But while you may be tempted to turn up the air conditioning and stay indoors, some people spread false rumors that can put your safety at risk.
One rumor is that you shouldn’t fill up your car’s fuel tank in the summer because it can explode from the heat. Another is to open the tank once a day to let the hot air escape. Sounds scary, right? Well, don’t worry, these are just myths.
According to road safety experts we spoke with, Carriage Times, these are “old tales that pop up a lot on social media, especially in the summer.” Thomas Edelman, Founder and Managing Director of Road Safety UAE, explained that automakers and experts design and test vehicles to withstand all kinds of weather conditions, including extreme heat.
He said the outside temperature must exceed 250 degrees Celsius, more than twice the boiling point of water, for an explosion to occur. He also said it has a fuel system to deal with heat-induced fuel expansion and vaporization.
So what should you do instead of believing these rumors? Edelman advised drivers to fill up as much gas as possible to avoid running out of gas or being stranded in the heat. He also said that filling up the tank could improve gas mileage, especially for motorcycles.
Of course, there are some common sense rules to follow at gas stations, such as turning off your engine, not smoking or using your cell phone, and keeping the windows closed. You should also keep an eye on children and watch out for other vehicles.
The bottom line is don’t let fake news ruin your summer road trip. Stay safe and calm.
