Rookie Grove sets the tone on the mound as Hayward homer hits a decisive 5-2
4:29 a.m. UTC
BALTIMORE – Before the three-game series against the Orioles begins, manager Dave Roberts said facing one of the best-performing teams in the majors would be a good test for the Dodgers so far in the season.
After Los Angeles’ big 10-3 win at Camden Yards on Tuesday night, the Dodgers won the first two games of the series against the Owes and continue to claim that they are still one of the best teams in the majors despite roster changes last offseason.
“It was really impressive,” said Roberts. “They are a good club, a really tough club. Luckily for us, we were out of danger. [Félix Bautista and Yennier Cano] in the backend [of Baltimore’s bullpen]. That’s important when you play for the Orioles.”
Tuesday was one of the Dodgers’ most complete wins of the season. On the mound, Michael Grove got off to perhaps his best start in the majors, giving up just one run and striking out over five to four innings.
Grove was robbed of 3-2 counts several times, but was able to execute pitches when needed. Most importantly, Grove showed improvement against left-handed hitters who had struggled all season, holding Baltimore’s left-handed hitters to just two hits. This is mainly due to the newly acquired cutter.
“I needed something lefty to throw in,” Grove said. “I’ve been working on it for the last few weeks, and today I’ve been on the mend and it’s finally starting to work, so I just stuck with it.”
With Bobby Miller, Emmett Sheehan and the Grove getting off to a solid start, the rotation’s three rookies have held their own through their turns this time around, but will be key to Clayton Kershaw’s return from injury next month.
With the Aug. 1 trade deadline looming, Dodgers rookies know the club may consider adding to the rotation. But still they seem unfazed.
“Yeah, I know that’s probably an area we have to work on. We have three rookies in the rotation right now, and it’s no secret,” Grove said. “I feel like growing pains are coming.
“But I’m very confident in Emmett, and I’m very confident in Bobby and myself that we can get the job done if needed. I’ll leave it up to the front desk.”
Significant improvements in the pitching staff, especially the bullpen, have made the Dodgers a dangerous team in recent weeks. The Los Angeles lineup has been a strength of the team all season and shows no signs of slowing down.
The city of Los Angeles posted some fraudulent numbers on Tuesday. The first rally was two innings chasing a five-pointer that started with a three-run home run off right-hander Tyler Wells by Jason Heyward. Hayward has nine home runs this season.
“It’s hard to make a lot of money in those conditions, so it’s nice to have the cash,” Hayward said. “But when you have guys up front, you want to hit a good at-bat to get to base, take as much life as possible, and give the pitcher a little slack.”
The Dodgers’ offense gave the staff some more breathing room with a 4-run inning to end the game. Although he didn’t hit a home run on target, he recorded a draw with 5 walks, 4 consecutive walks from the first inning.
“As a baseball player, I understand that there are periods in the season when things get better,” Hayward said. “There will be tougher stretches to follow. But so far, I think we’ve done a good job of executing and keeping it simple and playing good baseball.”
Los Angeles will have Julio Urias on the mound and a chance to wipe out the Orioles on Wednesday. They’ll have a chance to make yet another statement after the All-Star break.
“I think we believe that if we play to our ability, we can beat anyone,” Roberts said. “We’ve proven that when you’re not playing good baseball, it goes the other way. But it’s important to play good at the right time.”
