Lake Nona Campus
First announced in July 2021, Disney planned to move 2,000 cast members from its California campus to Orlando. Disney was to invest his $864 million in the new Lake Nona campus.
The Lake Nona Campus will house Walt Disney’s Imagineers and professionals from Disney Parks, Experiences and Products. 2,000 positions is less than his 5% of Disney’s total employment in California.
$864 million is the current estimate, but Disney said costs could increase. At least he has $624 million in funding for new campus facilities and equipment.
Disney applied for and was granted a capital investment tax credit through the state. This was one of his incentives to choose the Florida location. Proximity to Walt Disney World was another possible incentive, as most jobs are from the Parks, Experiences, and Products departments.
Orlando Business Journal The company says Lake Nona’s benefits include available housing, underfilled schools, nearby infrastructure such as decent commuter roads, and a lack of state income taxes. Disadvantages included potential disruption from moving jobs away from headquarters, loss of talent, and potential “poaching” of key executives by other companies.
past disputes
The move-in date was originally scheduled for 2023, but has been postponed to 2026. The delay is partly due to a dispute between Disney and Governor Ron DeSantis and the state of Florida last summer. This caused a lot of trouble among the relocating cast members, as some had already sold their homes in California and were left up in the air afterward.
Other Imagineers were already reeling from the relocation plans, with some choosing not to stay with the company. , prompting Disney to reverse its decision to move.
The Walt Disney Company has purchased over 60 acres of land for its new Lake Nona campus.
next step
Now that the project has progressed, the next course of action will include a review of the building elevations and landscaping plans. Once that is done, the project will proceed to permitting.
