Super Bowl week brings a media extravaganza regardless of the city where the big game is being held. This was further emphasized by the fact that it was held in Las Vegas. What we learned Wednesday may have answers for quarterback Baker Mayfield and the Bucs’ plans this offseason.
Baker Mayfield made an appearance, along with the show’s mainstay, former Bucks Rob Gronkowski, making it a rich Bucks moment on The Kay Adams Show. During a commercial break, Mayfield chatted with another guest on the show, Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young, a former signal-caller for the Bucs.
The microphone typically turns off during commercial breaks and doesn’t turn back on until the show is broadcast live again. But this time it’s different.
There’s a hot mic situation recording a conversation between Baker Mayfield and Steve Young that Bucks fans will want to hear.
Baker Mayfield hints at return with Bucks
While Adams and Gronkowski were having a side discussion, Young began asking Mayfield about his future plans this offseason. Based on Baker Mayfield’s responseall roads seem to lead to a stay in Tampa.
“You’re in the right place right now,” Young began, to which Baker Mayfield responded, “Yeah.”
It’s hard to tell verbatim what the next few words were because of the variety of conversations that took place, but Mayfield ultimately announced that he hoped the Bucs would try to re-sign wide receiver Mike. “Let’s take some back,” he said in connection with the attempt. There are also other important free agents, including Evans and safety Antwon Winfield Jr.
Young concluded with, “Let’s settle down there and build a career.”
We can assume that the context of Mayfield and Young’s conversation is about returning to the Bucks. If it’s a team Mayfield has never been a part of before, what other team could he argue with in terms of “getting pieces back”?
All signs point to Baker Mayfield re-signing with the Bucks
Hot Mic isn’t the only signal that Baker Mayfield will re-sign with the team on a new contract this offseason.
The idea that Mayfield wants the Bucks and the Bucks want Mayfield is probably the biggest secret. New offensive coordinator Liam Cohen began his inaugural press conference less than two minutes into saying that a big reason he accepted the role was because of the potential opportunity to work together.
It also helps that Mayfield was there when Cohen arrived at the AdventHealth Training Center. reunite with him. As Steve Young hinted, Baker Mayfield has every chance to stick with the Bucs and be their quarterback long-term. If Tampa Bay gets the pieces back around him, he could build on this past season and really build something in Tampa Bay.
