Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis condemned Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg Jr.’s indictment of former President Donald Trump and avoided using Trump’s name in his speech.
“Ever since he was elected, the Manhattan district attorney has publicly said he would downgrade as many felonies to misdemeanors as possible,” DeSantis said at an event in Pennsylvania on Saturday.
“He was going to keep as many people out of prison as possible, even for repeat offenders, and he was quoted as saying he was going to make all of this clear as part of criminal justice reform.” “So that’s his stance. He doesn’t want to prosecute people for felonies. So now he’s turning around for purely political purposes and not wanting them to commit felonies.” We are indicting the former president for misdemeanor trying to convert.”
DeSantis, a potential Trump rival in the Republican primary, appeared to hint that Bragg had indicted Trump last week, but the Florida governor didn’t name either individual.
DeSantis Teases Manhattan da Bragg’s ‘Flimsy’ Trump Indictment in New York Speech: Agenda ‘Not the Rule of Law’
DeSantis said the indictment was an example of leftists using the law to “target political opponents” and “weaponizing it for political purposes”.
“I can tell you this: these are [billionaire George] The Soros-backed DA is a threat to society,” continued DeSantis. “They are a threat to the rule of law. I didn’t leave it. I removed him from his post and he’s out.”
DeSantis struck a similar tone in another speech on Saturday in Long Island, N.Y., appearing to defend Trump without using his name.
Indictment gives Trump a political boost, but some GOP operatives wonder how long it will last
“His whole thing is people don’t want to be put in jail and want to downgrade felonies to misdemeanors..then he turns around and makes flimsy charges against the former president of the United States Bragg, according to the New York Post.
Trump is scheduled to appear in New York on Tuesday for arraignment, centered around paying “hush money” to adult film star Stormy Daniels.
