Democratic officials across the country applauded the recent asylum announcement before President Biden made his first visit to the southern border on Sunday.
The announcement included details on how the Biden administration could better manage the flow of asylum seekers, mostly from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela. That happened Sunday before Biden visited the U.S.-Mexico border in El Paso, Texas.
Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser tweeted, “Thank you to the Biden-Harris administration for its renewed commitment to addressing immigration with the nuances and resources befitting this issue. I support policies that reflect my values,” he tweeted.
“Today, President Biden’s announcement that he will expand humanitarian assistance programs to allow more asylum seekers to travel to the United States safely, legally and in a more controlled manner comes as federal partners It’s an important and positive step in helping us better manage this humanitarian crisis,” New York City Mayor Eric Adams said in a press release.

He also praised the Biden administration’s “partnership and response to our call to action.”
Biden announced on Thursday that migrants who try to enter the United States illegally will be immediately deported to Mexico. The mayor’s praise came just days after he specifically called the immigration crisis “really embarrassing” on a “national level” and said his city was overwhelmed by its impact.

Biden’s visit to the southern border comes at the start of the two-day North American summit in Mexico City, which begins Monday. He will be joined by Mexican President Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

In addition to the immigration crisis, leaders are expected to discuss how a cooperative North America can tackle climate change, manufacturing, trade, and the economy.
Biden will arrive at the Palacio Nacional in Mexico City on Monday afternoon.
