David Lynch, the film director known for films such as “Blue Velvet,” “Mulholland Drive,” and the television series “Twin Peaks,” has died. He was 78 years old.
His family shared the sad news on Facebook. write“It is with great sadness that we, his family, announce the passing of this man and artist, David Lynch. We ask that you respect his privacy at this time.”

Lynch revealed in 2024 that she had been diagnosed with emphysema as a result of a lifetime of smoking.
Lynch began his film career in 1977 with the cult classic Eraserhead. He went on to direct the critically acclaimed The Elephant Man (1980) and the commercially unsuccessful Dune (1984), followed by the dark and twisted Dune (1984). Blue Velvet” (1986) and the road movie “Wild at Heart” (1990).
He changed the face of television with the 1990 murder mystery show Twin Peaks.
The director later returned to film with films such as Lost Highway (1997), Mulholland Drive, and Inland Empire (2006).
Lynch has been nominated for an Oscar for Best Director four times over the years, and won an honorary Oscar in 2020.
Nicolas Cage in “Wild at Heart” said Deadline said Lynch was “a singular genius in the world of cinema and one of the greatest artists of our time or of any time.”
He continued, “He was brave, intelligent, and a maverick with a fun sense of humor. I never had more fun on a movie set than working with David Lynch. He was always pure gold. I will continue.”
Kyle MacLachlan, who starred in “Blue Velvet” and “Twin Peaks” I wroteOn social media, she wrote, “42 years ago, for reasons beyond my comprehension, David Lynch plucked me from obscurity and cast me as the lead in his first and last big-budget movie. He clearly saw something that I didn’t even realize. I owe my entire career and my entire life to his vision.”
He added: “What I saw in him was an enigmatic, intuitive person with an ocean of creativity bubbling within him. I was touching what was there.”
Mulholland Drive actress Laura Harring paid tribute to David on Instagram. she I wrote“Oh, dear David, every artist and human being who ever met you will mourn your passing, but I will miss you as you make your films, write, paint, and meditate from above. Patricia Arquette during an appearance on SiriusXM’s “Town Hall Hosted by Andy Cohen” share“I worked on ‘Lost Highway’ with him,” she said, adding that she had recently tried to get in touch. “I felt like I had to meet David. David was just amazing. There’s no one like him.”
Ben Stiller also appeared on the show and revealed that he lived across the street from David and used to go trick-or-treating at his house when he was a kid. He praised the filmmaker, saying, “He was just a visionary director who, as you know, was able to make films in the commercial world and also make art within it.”
