A fence cut at the Dallas Zoo’s clouded leopard habitat on Friday allowed one of the animals to escape, but it wasn’t the only apparent tampering at the zoo that day, police said.
“Zoo personnel showed investigators similar cuts found in the habitat surrounding a breed of monkey called the Langur,” Dallas Police said in a news release.
A clouded leopard named Nova went missing Friday morning after her enclosure was cut open in what police called a “deliberate act,” and the zoo was closed.
The leopard was found safe Friday night on the grounds of the zoo, which reopened on Saturday. The langurs did not escape even though the fence was cut.
Dallas Police said the amputation of the two enclosures is still under investigation. “It is unclear whether the two incidents are related,” police said Saturday.
Clouded leopards are classified as ‘vulnerable’ by the International Union for Conservation of Nature due to habitat loss and poaching.
According to the World Wildlife Fund, about 10,000 felines remain in the wild in Southeast Asia.
According to the World Wildlife Fund, leopards typically weigh 11 to 20 kilograms (24 to 44 pounds).
The zoo said Nova was under veterinary examination on Friday night, but there were no early signs of injury.
