good morning. Today is his March 1st and today’s image shows his two nebulae in the constellation Orion.
The Flame Nebula can be seen on the left side of the image. This is a joke. It is so named because it is a commonly used emoji in game chat. Rather, it is an emission nebula about 1,000 light-years from Earth. On the right side of the image is the rather iconic Horsehead Nebula, which exactly resembles a horse’s head. It is located less than 1,400 light years from Earth. The darkness of the nebula is mainly due to thick dust that blocks the light of the stars behind it.
Andrew Desrosiers submitted this image taken from his home in Ashby, Massachusetts. This is the result of observing the same spot in the night sky for about 60 hours.
“This is part of a project I started earlier this winter to keep my telescope trained on this part of the sky all winter long,” he told me. “So far he’s gotten 60 hours of exposure data.” He hopes to reach 100 by the end of the season.
