On Thursday afternoon, Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón held a press conference about convicted murderers Lyle and Eric Menendez.
In 1996, the Menendez brothers were convicted of the 1989 murders of their parents and sentenced to life in prison without parole.
They spent nearly 35 years in prison. They have appealed the verdict several times, but have always been rejected.
Eric and Lyle’s lawyers recently requested a new trial, citing new evidence, including allegations of sexual abuse by Roy Rosselló against Eric and Lyle’s father, Jose Menendez. The brothers claimed sexual abuse by their parents was a mitigating factor in their decision to kill them.
Their defense team also focused on a letter Eric wrote to his cousin Andy Cano several months before the murders about his father’s alleged sexual abuse.
Gascon said at a news conference that the prosecutor’s office is reviewing the allegations and will then decide whether to proceed with a new trial or impose a new sentence.
The murder case is receiving renewed attention thanks to Ryan Murphy’s Netflix sensation Monsters: The Story of Lyle and Erik Menendez.
After the show aired, Eric released a statement from prison criticizing the “horrible and blatant lies” on the show.
“Extra” recently spoke to stars Cooper Koch and Nicolas Chavez, who responded to Eric’s criticism.
Cooper showed his support for Eric, saying, “I know how he feels and I know how difficult it is to have the worst parts of your life dramatized on TV for millions of people to see. So I’m just cheering. I will,” he said. he. I understand how you feel. ”
Murphy was less sympathetic to Eric’s accusations. THR This week, “The Menendez brothers are going to send me flowers. They haven’t been this much in the last 30 years. And they’re getting attention, not just in this country, but around the world.” I know for a fact that because of the interest in my show and what we did, many people have offered to help. ”
Later this month, Netflix will release “The Menendez Brothers,” a documentary that shares sides of Eric and Lyle.
