Unlike other fast food restaurants, Chick-fil-A typically does not have a microphone drive-thru system. Instead, customers will line up in their cars and an employee will take their order in person.
“We’re very intentional with our drive-thru design to create a unique and different experience,” Kalila Cooper, Chick-fil-A’s director of service and hospitality, said in an interview. forbes. “The idea is to bring our hospitality to the drive-thru as well.”
While that may be the intent, some argue that this ordering method is harmful to employees. For example, one employee said he had to work outside wearing a T-shirt because Chick-fil-A refused to buy his $60 brand-name jacket. Another TikTok user photographed the pods some employees use to work outdoors in harsh conditions. Another TikToker claimed that Chick-fil-A employees are being made to take orders in 107-degree heat.
Now, the debate has been reignited after another video on the subject sparked discussion on TikTok. TikTok user @stacked_skinny shows his Chick-fil-A workers working in 28-degree temperatures in a clip that has been viewed more than 66,000 times.
“Chick-fil-A was having a bad day and employees had to take orders in 28 degree weather,” the TikToker said in the video. “Like, what kind of thing is that? Chick-fil-A. What are you going to do by freezing your employees out here? That’s crazy.”
Later in the video, the TikToker says that employees are being given portable heaters to combat the cold.
“Wow, everyone has portable heaters?” he says. “That’s crazy. That’s crazy. They used portable heaters to get them out here.”
Commenters largely agreed with the TikToker’s assessment.
One user asked, “What’s the point of having employees take orders outside in the cold when you can order at the counter?”
“Like?? Not even busy. I thought they only had employees to help take orders when the line was long,” said another.

Other commenters shared that they live in colder environments and have still seen workers outside.
“We had yesterday too. Michigander. Colder than that. And they can’t get tips,” the TikToker elaborated.
“It was 5 o’clock. [degrees] Last Saturday, everyone was outside,” he said a second time.
Still, some argue that the task is not as difficult as it first seems.
“28 degrees isn’t bad and I’m rotating so I don’t stay out too long,” one commenter wrote.
“Well, you can change out the heater, gloves, hoodie, and hat every 15 minutes, so it’s honestly not that bad,” another user explained.
