CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – Charleston County has voted to commit more than $5 million to building affordable housing across the county.
The Charleston County Finance Board on Thursday voted to allocate $5.8 million to build 317 units of affordable housing.
Charleston County Councilwoman Jenny Costa Honeycutt said it’s part of a gap financing and infill development program funded by the American Rescue Plan Act.
She said various community partners are applying for grants, which could award between $500,000 and $1 million for the project.
Honeycutt told News 2 the county is addressing affordable housing needs outlined in the Future Housing Plan.
“This is one of the tools that we have in our toolbox, using ARPA funds to fill gaps where funding through state law changes or other mechanisms hasn’t been able to meet the needs of a project,” Honeycutt said, “so we’re able to provide those additional resources so we can get the project completed.”
The allocation is expected to be presented to the County Council for approval next Tuesday.
