The man who was stabbed to death near downtown San Francisco early Tuesday morning was Cash App founder and former Square chief technology officer Bob Lee, a tech executive, sources said. NBC Bay Area.
San Francisco police said officers responded to a report of the stabbing around 2:35 a.m. Tuesday.
Police said the man was taken to a hospital where his injuries were not life-threatening, but he later died.
Police did not release the man’s name, but sources identified Lee, who was MobileCoin’s chief product officer. NBC Bay Area.
MobileCoin CEO Joshua Goldbard told ABC affiliates: KGO of San Francisco. “Moby was his dream. A privacy wallet for the 21st century. I miss him every day.”
MobileCoin did not immediately respond to a request for a statement early Wednesday.
As of early Wednesday, there appeared to be no arrests.
Police said Tuesday the case was being investigated by the department’s Homicide Division.
Former MMA fighter Jake Shields remembers the tech executive as a “loyal friend,” and Lee’s social media has been flooded with tributes.
In an earlier tweet, Shields said, “Last night I found out my best friend was killed” while walking in a “nice” part of town.
In response to Shields’ tweet, Twitter chief Elon Musk said he was “extremely sorry” to learn of Lee’s death.
