On Thursday, Carol Burnett cemented her legendary status forever with a handprint and footprint ceremony at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.
Extra’s Melvin Robert spoke with Burnett, who reacted to the sad news that revered actor Donald Sutherland has passed away at the age of 88.
“I’m a huge fan of his,” she says. “My favorite performance of his was in ‘Ordinary People’ with Mary Tyler Moore. He stole my heart. He was so incredible, and it was an unusual role for him, an unusual role for Donald.”
When Mel noted that he’d brought plenty of laughter to a dark world, the 91-year-old icon smiled and said, “It’s been a lot of fun and I hope to continue to have fun.”
Burnett called being honored in Hollywood a “dream come true,” saying, “This is my neighborhood. I grew up in Hollywood, just a few blocks from here, and I used to come here with my grandmother as a little girl and see all the handprints and footprints of movie stars. I remember bending down as a little girl and putting my hand on Betty Grable’s handprint. She was my favorite movie star.” my I was surprised to see a handprint there.”
Speaking about what came to her mind today, Carol said: “It goes back to when I was a little girl. It’s just amazing to think, ‘Oh my God, my hands are there now.’
Looking back on her career, Barnett commented on what she is most proud of: “I guess having done my show, doing my show for 11 years, and having the pleasure of working with Harvey. [Korman] Tim [Conway] Vicky [Lawrence] and Lyle [Waggoner]and all the guests I had.”
“The Carol Burnett Show” aired from 1967 to 1978.
Currently, she stars in another hugely popular show, Palm Royale, whose second season is set to film in the fall.
Carol is set to return, and told “Extra” that the biggest thing she’s looking forward to is “finding out who I am, who my character is. She left in Season 1 as a mystery.”
