Earlier this year there were two outbreaks of salmonella disease from sweet cream brand mini pastries. One was in Canada and the other in the US.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration closed its investigation into the outbreak of salmonella, which originated from sweet cream branded mini pastries in March. The FDA identified 18 patients who needed to be hospitalized. The patients spread across seven states: California, Illinois, Massachusetts, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.
The outbreak in the US was associated with the outbreak in Canada, which was also traced to a mini-pastry. Canadian public health officials reported that 22 of the 69 confirmed cases were hospitalized.
The caught mini pastries were manufactured in Italy and exported to the US by Piu Che Dolci Inc., an import from Quebec, Canada. The pastries were recalled in Canada and the US.
Using the Institute’s Flexible Funding Model Program, Infectious Disease Services within the New Jersey Department of Health worked with the Patterson City Health Department and the Institute for Public Health and Environmental Research to collect and analyze sweet cream brand mini pastry samples from warehouses that received the recalled products. Three samples were positive for Salmonella and are genome sequence-wide match to outbreak strains.
The FDA has added pastries from Italian manufacturer Sweet Cream SRLS to the red list of US import alerts #99-19.
