The index opened 3.28 points lower at 1,443.26 but fluctuated between 1,441.34 and 1,445.18 during the session.
In the broader market, decliners outnumbered advancers by a ratio of 438 to 280, while the number of counters remained unchanged at 429, with 1,204 not traded and 10 suspended.
Sales amounted to 1.72 billion units, equivalent to RM880.65 million.
Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd vice-president of equity research Tong Pak Leng said traders largely ignored the better-than-expected earnings report, but Wall Street fell sharply overnight as 10-year US Treasury yields soared. He said the stock closed lower.
“For today, we believe the stock price buildup will continue but be subdued, so we expect the index to remain within a narrow range of 1,440-1,450 today,” he said.
Regionally, Singapore’s Straits Times Index fell 0.64% to 3,151.59, Japan’s Nikkei Stock Average fell 0.07% to 32,018.52, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index fell 0.10% to 17,755.25, and China’s SSE Composite Index fell 0.61. % to 3,064.76. , while South Korea’s Kospi added: 2461.81, up 0.07%.
Locally, Bursa’s leading banks Public Bank and Tenaga National fell by 3 sen to RM4.14 and RM9.99 respectively, Petronas Chemicals fell by 17 sen to RM7.48, while CIMB fell by 2 sen to RM7.48. With the addition of sen, the price was RM5.59, and Maybank remained flat. At RM8.95.
