The Buccaneers signed wide receiver Cody Thompson on Wednesday night. Thompson’s agent, Equity Sports, said in a statement. Posted the news The signing ceremony was posted publicly on their social media accounts.
Thompson has been in the league since signing with the Chiefs’ practice squad as an undrafted free agent in 2019. He also spent time on the Seahawks and Bengals’ practice squads that year. Thompson returned to the Seahawks and played for them from 2020-2023. He started on the practice squad but was called up to the active roster at times, appearing in 12 career games in a special teams role. He has three career tackles and one fumble recovery.

He appeared in five games with Seattle in 2021 and seven in 2023. Thompson has one 10-yard catch in his career, which came in Week 4 of last season. During his time with the Seahawks, he had the opportunity to work with former Buccaneers offensive coordinator Dave Canales.
At the collegiate level, Thompson plays for Toledo in the MAC. He was named a First Team All-MAC player twice, in 2016 and 2018. His best year came in 2016, when he had 64 catches for 1,269 yards and 11 touchdowns. Over his career, Thompson recorded 181 receptions, 3,312 yards receiving and 30 touchdowns.
Thompson will be competing for the Buccaneers’ final receiver spot and could earn it if he excels on special teams.

The Buccaneers had a few vacancies after waiving Deven Thompkins last week. They filled one of those positions with Cody Thompson. Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, and Jalen McMillan In both cases, the team and Trey Palmer are sure to win, but there aren’t many open positions for the remaining players.
Tampa Bay remains focused on Rakim Jarrett and has Cephas Johnson III and Ryan Miller returning from the practice squad. Other players on the roster include Raylee Webb, 2024 undrafted free agents Kameron Johnson, Tanner Knud and Lateral Jones. Thompson brings a bit of experience to the team.
Coach Todd Bowles seems to have high praise for the Buccaneers’ wide receivers outside of Evans and Godwin.
“The competition is going to be intense in training camp,” Bowles said. [are] “This is going to surprise people. I’m excited to see them with the pads on. I’m excited to see what happens.”
