Cody Mauch ranked 22nd on PFF’s top guard list
Not only is Cody Mauch on the list, it also had 11 spots from the bottom, showing a sharp rise in just a year. Mauch has shown considerable improvements as both a run blocker and a pass protector. He developed an implicit rhythm with right tackle Luke Godeke to become one of the best double teams in the NFL. Mauch’s strike timing improved during his sophomore season, adding muscle and strength to improve his ability to create leg drive and vertical displacement.

And as a pass protector, he improved his eye discipline to pick up stunts and twists, adding a stronger anchor of his already elite recovery skills. In doing so, he reduced the pressure allowed in a third of 2023. Last year, Mauch ranked fifth in the NFL with a allowed pressure rate at 2.63%. It matches closely with him 98.5 PFF ranked third in the efficiency of trusting him. His season was so impressive that he insisted he should have considered it Postseason honor.
Mauch is one of the six NFC security guards who will make the list. Falcons right guard Chris Lindstrom has won the list for the second season in a row. His counterpart, Matthew Bergeron, ranked 23rd overall, just behind Mauch. Panthers duo Damian Lewis and Robert Hunt were listed on the grading site on the 15th and 16th respectively. Saint Cesar Lewis just made the 30th overall list.
Mauch’s placement on this list is a positive step forward, but the hedging of the PFF may be a bit too big. They have three spots in front of the 33-year-old unsigned Brandon Shelf before eight spots in decline for the Mouch and Browns eight spots.
Ben Bredeson has not created a top guard list for PFF
After signing a new three-year deal with the Bucs following a solid season, left guard Ben Bredeson didn’t earn a spot on the list. Despite being consistent, Bredeson’s play is not worth mentioning as one of the best interior blockers in the game. Tampa Bay has found a way to weaponize him as both a pinner and a puller in the run game. However, he suffered from power and was able to allow a pressure rate of 5.0% last year.

BUCS improved interior led to aggressive improvements
Just four years ago, the interior of the Bucs line was home to two of the best in the business: left guard Ali Marpet and center Ryan Jensen and right guard Alex Cappa. The three of them proved to be a scary front. However, in one offseason signing with Bengal, Malpett retired and Jensen suffered injuries and prevented him from playing again in regular season games. Such a structural shift can ruin most crimes and even franchises.
However, BUCS’ leadership is intentionally built through its sales. General Manager Jason Licht and his scouts found Cody Moach in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft. They signed Bredeson to the free agent for a bounceback contender in 2024, adding Graham Burton, the 2024 first-round pick at center, and moving Luke Godeke, the 2022 second round pick, to the right tackle.
Just three years after the disbandment of the championship line, the Bucs replaced 80% of the units and found a top five mashup. That o-line is quarterback Baker Mayfield Minimum pressure quarterback for the NFL.
And the majority of these improvements that led to the top five attacks were the addition of Mauch to the right guard.
