Pewter Report’s Scott Reynolds answers your questions. @PewterReport Twitter accounts are added to the Bucs Mailbag weekly. Submit your questions to the Bucs Mailbag weekly via Twitter using the hashtag #PRMailbag. Here are the Bucks questions we chose to answer in this week’s issue.
Question: Do you think Baker Mayfield will be re-signed soon? It certainly seems like he and Mike Evans are presenting a united front.
answer: Yes, that should be further accelerated by the Bucs re-signing wide receiver Mike Evans on Monday morning. baker mayfield He plans to re-sign immediately, but preferably before free agency begins at noon on March 11th. At that point, a public negotiation period will begin, allowing other teams to contact Mayfield and his agent and make offers.
However, Mayfield cannot sign with another team until the official start of free agency on Wednesday, March 13th at 4pm ET. However, if Mayfield doesn’t re-sign by March 11, another team could bid up his price, potentially making it even more expensive to re-sign with the Bucks.
Mayfield has strong interest in re-signing with Tampa Bay, but reportedly won’t give the Bucs a hometown discount. Mayfield should feel even more comfortable signing an extension with the Bucks knowing that Evans will be wearing the red and white for at least the next two seasons.
However, if Mayfield becomes a free agent, Tampa Bay will face competition for his services. Atlanta and Minnesota are both expected to be interested in acquiring Mayfield if he hits the open market next Monday.
Still, one team official said the Bucks are optimistic a deal will be finalized this week before free agency begins. Tampa Bay kept Mayfield and then began working on deals with All-Pro safety Antoine Winfield Jr., linebacker Lavonte David, kicker Chase McLaughlin, and then Pro Bowl left tackle Tristan Wirfs. He is expected to sign a lucrative long-term contract extension.
Question: Is there a backup plan in case Baker Mayfield goes elsewhere? The free agent market outside of Kirk Cousins is pretty rare, and the 26th pick is too steep for a QB to jump into the top two.
answer: Yes, Baker Mayfield is probably the best option at the quarterback position in free agency this year. Mayfield revived his career in Tampa Bay after signing a one-year, demonstration contract worth a total of $4 million. He had a career year in which he scored a career-high 28 touchdowns and passed for over 4,000 yards.
Although Mayfield was an injury replacement, he also became a Pro Bowler for the first time in his career. However, upon arriving in Orlando, he went on to have a successful season, winning skill contests and winning Offensive MVP in the Pro Bowl.
If the team hadn’t somehow re-signed Mayfield this year, I doubt Kirk Cousins would have been in the Bucks’ plans. He is 36 years old and has a torn Achilles tendon, and his career postseason record is just 1-4.
If Mayfield shocks everyone and moves on, the likely backup plan is either Jacoby Brissett, who was considered last offseason before signing with Washington, or the injured Ryan Tannehill. right. Both will be a rookie quarterback and a makeshift journeyman quarterback who will compete with Kyle Trask for the starting spot in Tampa Bay in 2024.
Also, if Mayfield somehow leaves, the Bucs will likely draft a quarterback higher than expected this year. Tampa Bay formally interviewed four quarterbacks in Indianapolis: Washington’s Michael Penix Jr., Michigan’s JJ McCarthy, Tulane’s Mike Pratt and South Carolina’s Spencer Rattler.
Q: With numbers 55, 63 and 99 now retired and numbers 20, 40 and 47 no longer in use, what do you think will happen to numbers 13 and 54 once Mike Evans and Lavonte David are gone?
answer: The guess here is that both Bucs wide receiver Mike Evans and linebacker Lavonte David’s numbers will never be worn again. Regardless of whether the team officially retires their jersey numbers or whether they will never be in circulation again, it’s safe to say that Evans and David will be the last Buccaneers to wear jerseys No. 13 and No. 54, respectively.
Both Evans and David are also Ring of Honor locks for the Bucks. David will go down in Tampa Bay history as the franchise’s second linebacker behind Hall of Famer Derrick Brooks. David has truly had a Hall of Fame career, but he hasn’t made any Pro Bowl or All-Pro appearances, which will ultimately keep him away from Canton.
But Evans is a future Hall of Famer and already the Bucs’ all-time best offensive player. In fact, if Evans is inducted into the Hall of Fame, there could be a strong argument that he belongs on the Bucks’ mythical Mount Rushmore, next to Brooks and Hall of Famers Warren Sapp and Ronde Barber.
Eventually, Evans will push Lee Roy Selmon off the Bucks’ Mount Rushmore. Because he set NFL records, franchise records and won a Super Bowl, something Selmon was unable to accomplish in his NFL career.
Question: Which college players caught the attention of Bucs management?
answer: The Bucks interviewed 125 draft prospects last week at the NFL Scouting Combine. The Pewter Report identified 40 of the 45 formal interviews. Tampa Bay did it. That would normally be an indication that the Bucs are interested, but the team went into stealth mode last year and didn’t interview defensive tackle Kariyah Kancey at the combine, and Tampa Bay chose him as a top pre-draft prospect. I didn’t even let them participate in the 30th visit. Cuncey will be the Bucks’ first-round pick.
A total of 10 offensive linemen took official visits to the Bucs this year, the most of any position group. With a hole at left guard and a need for an upgrade at center, it’s safe to say the team will likely draft at least one offensive lineman by the end of Day 2. The Bucs will interview at least 21 offensive linemen in Indianapolis, with just over half of those interviews being informal interviews.
As for the remaining positions on offense, Tampa Bay has four official visits with the quarterback, three official visits with the wide receiver, three official visits with the tight end, and two official visits with the running back. there were. In a hint that the Bucs may re-sign Mike Evans, despite the team having a very deep receiver class, only eight total interviews were conducted with the wide receiver, five of which were unofficial. there were.
Tampa Bay scheduled at least eight formal interviews with the defensive lineman. Four were defensive tackles and five were outside linebacker candidates. Alabama edge rusher Chris Braswell, who was No. 26 in Pewter Report’s initial mock draft, couldn’t recall whether he had formal or informal interviews with the Bucs.
Tampa Bay also held three formal interviews with an inside linebacker, three with a safety and three with a cornerback. The Bucs conducted 20 interviews with cornerbacks, second most behind offensive linemen. Missouri cornerback Ennis Rakestraw and Auburn cornerback DJ James both met with Tampa Bay, but could not recall whether the interviews were formal or informal.
