Jaylin Smith ran for 4.45 on a 40-yard dash and showed the versatility to play cornerback, nickelback and safety in Southern California. At 5-foot-11, 187-pound Smith was the three-year starter in the Trojan defense, with 182 tackles, 12.5 tackles, two sacks, three intercepts, eight pass breakups and two forced fumbles.
Smith was the Trojan defensive MVP in the bowl game during the 2023 season, leading USC with two intercepts last year and ended his college career by accepting an invitation to the Senior Bowl. Smith didn’t allow a touchdown at external cornerback last season, but his size limitations could make him a candidate to play nickelbacks in slots in the NFL.
With Tykee Smith moving in strong safety from Nickelback in 2025, replacing Jordan Whitehead and potentially playing 100% of the snaps rather than 75%, Tampa Bay was looking for a cornerback to compete for slots this season. Christian Ijien, who started all games in the slots during the 2023 rookie season, could become a major contender, but the team will now add another candidate to the 2025 NFL Draft. Smith could become one of those options in three days.
