Bronnie James has made waves in both the NBA and the G-League, but not everyone is sure he belongs to the highest level. Former NFL linebacker Channing Crowder, known for his strong opinion, shot the younger outlook once again.
Crowder refuses to incite criticism of Bronnie James
During the episode of Pivot PodcastCrowder was asked if Bronnie’s recent performance changed his mind. His reaction? Company no.
“I’m not going to stay in the lane. They lost at age 30, so he got into the game and scored 17 points,” Crowder said. “He just shoots some three and cooks defensively. I want mine. [Lakers] Hats that reinforce my opinion [that] Brony shouldn’t do that [in the NBA]. ”
Crowder was referring to Bronnie’s 17-point performance in the Lakers’ 118-89 defeat to the Milwaukee Bucks on March 20th. Many saw it as a breakout moment, but for Crowder it wasn’t enough to guarantee a change in vision.
Dismissing career night in the G League
Co-host Ryan Clark tried to challenge Crowder’s stance by bringing Bronney’s impressive 39-point explosion for the South Bay Lakers in the G League against the Santa Cruz Warriors on March 24th. However, Crowder remained impressed.
“What do you know? Little Chan managed to score 31 in the G League,” Crowder scrunched. “Listen, I love LeBron. I don’t hate James’ family. I’m telling you the facts. Bronnie James shouldn’t be in the NBA.
“I saw him out there and cook the other night,” he continued. “Since Luka [Doncic] I got there and now I watched a lot of Lakers and he’s relaxed defensively… I can make a list of people who can’t play, Bronnie is at the bottom. ”
Is Crowder too strict?
Crowder’s comments are dull, but they may not be completely fair. Bronnie is still a raw talent adapting to a professional level. He has some defensive struggles, but labeling him full responsibility seems like an exaggeration.
Looking at his NBA stats, Bronnie averaged 2.3 points, 0.6 rebounds and 0.6 assists in a limited few minutes during the 2024-25 season. These numbers aren’t eye-catching, but they’re not too far from what you’d expect from the 55th drafted player overall.
There are criticisms that his NBA preparation may hold more weight if Bronnie struggles to carve out a meaningful role in a few years. However, given his recent flashes of potential, it’s too early to completely dismiss him. The Lakers clearly believe in his advantages, and proper development allowed him to turn into a solid role player.
Charles Berkley Weight
Channing Crowder is not the only sports personality to give his opinion on Bronnie’s development. NBA legend Charles Barkley also squealed, saying Bronney should have spent the entire season in the G-League.
“That kid, I wish him the best. He should be in the G League. He should be better as a player,” Berkley said. “He should have been in the G League all year round. Don’t sit on the bench.”
There are some truths to Berkley’s point. The ongoing minutes in the G League may have allowed Brony to develop at a faster pace, rather than sitting on the Lakers’ bench. However, the Lakers have chosen to use a hybrid approach, allowing them to gain experience in both leagues. It is still unknown if that is the best strategy.
Verdict: It’s too early to judge Brony’s future
Though opinions about Bronnie James are polarised, one thing is clear. He is still a work in progress. It seems premature to dismiss his potential, especially when he shows signs of growth.
Anyway, Bronnie’s journey has just begun. Whether he ultimately proves Crowder wrong or validates his criticism will depend on how he develops over the next few seasons. One thing is certain, all his movements continue to be scrutinized.
