The game quickly got out of hand as Purdy led four touchdown drives in the first half to take a 28-0 lead at halftime. Purdy scored on his third drive of the team’s contest, throwing his pass for a beautiful back-shoulder touchdown, Christian McCaffrey on the next drive.
The play was enough to make Purdy’s father break down in tears. Purdy’s dad was caught wiping away tears in the stands after his son beat the 49ers 21-0.
It was a poignant moment underscoring Purdy’s unlikely position in this position, as the 49ers committed to starting Lance in 2022. An early injury thwarted that plan, but the team wisely retained Garoppolo despite an offseason trade attempt.
Garoppolo put up solid numbers as usual and led the 49ers to victory before suffering an injury in Week 13. 33-17 victory over- miami dolphins.
The story should have ended there. Purdy was the last pick in the draft after all. It’s no shock to see him wince against the Bucks.
Instead, Purdy balled out. Before halftime, he led his 49ers on yet another touchdown on his drive. Brandon Ayuk for a score of 32 yards.
At halftime, the 49ers led the Buccaneers 28–0. It was the second time in his career that Brady trailed him by more than 28 points at halftime.
Even before Purdy scored the final touchdown of the half, the entire stadium was chanting his name.
Purdy didn’t add much to those numbers in the second half when the 49ers took a big lead. Josh Johnson Purdy finished 16 of 21 for 185 yards when 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan decided the contest was getting out of hand. He threw and scored two touchdowns against no interceptions.
After the game ended, Purdy ran to the stands and celebrated with his family.
Purdy hasn’t played a full two games in the NFL yet, so it’s probably too early to name him the next Brady. But Purdy has shown some ability in his first two NFL games, and should have plenty of chances to prove if this hot start is for real.
