San Diego – Bridge Builders Foundation is a non-profit organization based in Los Angeles. Dedicated to removing barriers of race and poverty through mentoring and educational assistance.
Tyrone Gray is a freshman at the University of California, San Diego. It was in high school that he first joined the Bridge Builder Foundation.
“Bridge Builders is important because it not only prepares us for the real world, but also gives us the opportunity to network with people who share the same goals,” Gray said.
Gray joined 35 students who were selected from over 100 applicants for the program from all over Southern California.
16-year-old Jelani Herndon said, “I’m excited and grateful. From where I’m from, this is not an everyday opportunity. I’ve been accepted here to learn about marine biology and our planet. I am very grateful for that,” he said. A student from Los Angeles.
The Scripps Institute of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego launched this program aimed at helping underrepresented communities of color reach their full potential through marine science and research-related activities. partnered with
Students live in university dormitories for five days and learn about careers in the fields of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences. They work with researchers to collect and analyze data.
“For a long time, I was one of the few black women in this field. It shows,” said Dr. Dijana Figueroa. She works with the Bridge Builders Foundation.
Gray says Bridge Builders has already opened many doors for him and has an inspirational message for other students.
“I’ll tell you this, whatever your personality, wherever you come from, you can do it. Don’t let anyone get in the way of what you want to achieve,” Gray said. .
High school students can apply next June Bridge builder program.
