Fresh off a breakout season with the Los Angeles Sparks, WNBA guard-forward Ray Burrell has even more excitement on the horizon. She is helping launch Unrivaled, a new player-owned 3-on-3 women’s basketball league, bringing together some of the world’s best players. “That was really exciting news for me,” Burrell said when Burrell’s agent approached her with the Unrivaled offer on the eve of the Sparks’ final game at Minnesota, after being named to the Unrivaled record team. Burrell, 24, told SELF. “I really enjoyed getting to know other players that I haven’t had much exposure to in the WNBA.”
To prepare for Unrivaled, where she will try an entirely new style of 3-on-3 in a short, full court, Burrell worked with Vinyl’s coach Teresa Weatherspoon (aka “T-Spoon”) to hone her skills and adapt her style. When it comes to workouts, Burrell lifts four days a week to maintain muscle, focusing on big compound movements like squats, bench presses, bird dog rows, and pulldowns, as well as building acceleration. And naturally, she needs enough sleep to compensate for all that hard work. “Sometimes my body just wants to stay awake, but I try to be in bed by at least 12 a.m. to make sure I’m ready for sleep,” she says. I always make sure to eat a good dinner before I go to bed.
I try to have dinner around 6pm or 7pm because I don’t want to be too close to bed. Usually my dinner depends on whether the next day is a game or practice day, but either way I try to get some protein, carbs, and veggies in.
If it’s game day, I’ll eat pasta or chicken to fuel me up. When I make pasta, I really like to keep it simple and make spaghetti and meatballs. I mean, it’s just a classic. For chicken dishes, I usually make barbecue or grilled chicken with sweet potatoes on the side.
