question: It feels like the Bucks will pick Baker Mayfield over Kyle Trask no matter what. If Trask plays better in the preseason, do you honestly think they’ll pick him?
answer: I think Kyle Trask could get a starter, but he has to have an exceptional preseason full of points with no turnovers, while Baker Mayfield is going to really struggle. . Trask will have to overcome his lack of regular-season experience, and that’s where Mayfield has a crucial advantage.
I think Mayfield will likely start the season as a starter for Minnesota. Because Mayfield could be the safer choice given his 69 career regular season starts. Todd Bowles’ job may be in jeopardy this year, but would he want to take the risk with an unproven Trask in the season opener?
As first reported by Pewter Report’s JC Allen, Mayfield will make his first preseason start. Trask will start Game 2 of the preseason against the Jets in New York. In his Fab 5 on his SR this Friday, we’ll cover the starting quarterback situation in-depth. That could suddenly be the biggest decision of the year for Todd Bowles. stay tuned.
question: Who won’t be in Friday night’s preseason opener?
answer: Nothing has been officially announced so far, but it’s safe to say that center Ryan Jensen and outside linebacker Charles Snowden won’t be playing. And, of course, rookie defensive tackle Kariya Kansi, who will miss the preseason with a calf injury, will not be a good fit either. Snowden has been sidelined with a groin injury, and the team may not want to risk getting injured again in the game by not returning to practice first.
As for Jensen, Bucks headquarters have concerns about when and if he will return to full practice. Jensen participated in individual practices for the first two weeks of training camp, but he has yet to participate in 11-on-11 practice or 1-on-1 pass protection/pass rush practice. Bucks head coach Todd Bowles made an ominous remark about Jensen’s availability after Monday’s practice.
“That’s a good question,” said Mr. Bowles. “Honestly, I don’t know. [his] progress. Some days are good, some days are not so good. I’ll just wait for an answer and move on from there. “
Robert Haingey will likely start at center, with Nick Leverett, Jon Morshon and rookie Chris Murray likely as backups.
question: Do you think this will be a truly competitive year for your current core? , Devin White, etc.?
answer: I really don’t think so. The NFC South has no clear favorites or frontrunners. I don’t know if things will change in the next year or two. The Bucks, two-time NFC South champions, have a sizable shot at a three-peat if their new Dave Canales-led offense works well and Todd Bowles picks the right quarterback.
The Bucks will have to make some decisions if the season doesn’t go as planned. But there’s a solid group of talent on this team, and I don’t think Tampa Bay wants to part with them. The Bucks seem reluctant to the idea of dismantling and rebuilding the team. Chris Godwin is not going anywhere.
Shaq Barrett’s massive $15 million salary (including $750,000 per game bonus) makes him virtually untradeable. Barrett, who turns 32 in November, is recovering from a torn Achilles tendon and will have a base salary of $16.25 million next year.
As for Devin White, if the Bucks end up trading him, the team that acquired him will have to feel comfortable extending his deal before next season. And that means paying him at least $18 million per season. Otherwise, he would be a free agent and teams would lose the draft picks they used to acquire him.
Question: Who do you think has an advantage in kick competition?
answer: At the moment, Chase McLaughlin is leading the kicking competition in Tampa Bay. He has scored slightly more kicks in practice than Rodrigo Blankenship. And remember, McLaughlin was signed during free agency and Blankenship was added during the Bucks’ minicamp. McLaughlin is expected to make $1.08 million this year and has strong legs that allow him to kick from 50+ yards.
But the competition will intensify during the preseason games. Whichever kicker does better under the lights has a good chance of winning the job. The pressure of kicking in a game is much more than the kicks scored or attempted in training camp practices.
question: I know a lot of the talk this offseason has been about how Joe Tryon Soyinka needs to take the next step. Do you think YaYa Diaby could replace him on the edge?
answer: yes. YaYa Diaby is off to a great start to her rookie year. He got off to a very good start in training camp and proved to be the strongest edge rusher on the Bucks roster. At 6-foot-3, 263 pounds, combined with incredible speed and explosive power, the power thrilled Tampa Bay coaches and the front office.
Diaby will push Joe Tryon Soyinka for playing time during his rookie season. Tryon Soyinka has had a decent camp, but so far it hasn’t been great. His experience, and the fact that this year has been something of a test for him, should clear him of any doubts about the starting role.
Diaby lacks polish, needs to work on counter moves and is developing, but if he rises and Tryon Soyinka stalls, he could be a starter at some point this season. I wouldn’t say it will, but don’t rule it out.
question: What will our new O-Line look like in camp? This year there will be new starters in all five positions. Are there any weaknesses? Are there any concerns?
answer: I think the big issue is Ryan Jensen’s health. The Bucks don’t know when he’ll be healthy enough to be cleared to practice 11-11 and play preseason games. Tristan Wirfs is a very good left tackle and is probably the team’s least concern at this point.
The team loves Cody Mauff’s long-term potential and feels he’s a solid second-round pick. Luke Goedeke is better at right tackling than left guard, but Matt Failer seems to have upgraded over Goedeke from a year ago. Of course, the preseason games will really tell if this unit has really progressed in camp or if it really needs more work on chemistry and continuity. We’ll know more about this Friday’s preseason opener against Pittsburgh.
question: Will Keyshawn Vaughan secure a spot in RB2, or will Chase Edmonds/Sean Tucker take the role? Do you think all four will rotate?
answer: Keshawn Vaughan is currently the number two running back. However, Chase Edmonds remains in good form in camp. He’s fast, has good burst and acceleration, and has a nifty hand as a receiver. The Bucks want to take a closer look at both Vaughn and Edmonds, who enter their contract years, in preseason games. Rachard White will pick up a carry and a catch in the preseason, but Tampa Bay wants to see an entire stable of running backs in three preseason games.
Rookie Sean Tucker will be in the spotlight as well, but the Bucks have several other Bucks in contention, including former practice squader Patrick Laird and undrafted free agent Ronnie Brown. Tucker is the fastest player to return to the Tampa Bay roster, and the team is looking forward to seeing how he performs. However, he has missed the entire offseason with a heart condition that requires recovery, which leaves him a little behind the rest of the field when it comes to regaining his offensive power.
