In this film, I felt that Isabel represented Black creatives who feel an obligation to speak out about all the issues and injustices that occur within our community. You are an experienced director and many of your projects speak directly to the Black community, but do you feel a weight of responsibility as a Black creator?
No, I do what I want to do without feeling burdened or burdened. I decide on my own projects. I’m not a hired director, so I don’t go around saying, “Give me a job,” but I write about what I want to express as an artist, what I want to share, and what I’m interested in. I’m interested in history, community, and solidarity. I am interested in our brothers and sisters around the world and their interconnectedness with the space around us.So whether it comes out like this wrinkles in time A black girl who travels through space in search of her father, or when they saw usthe story of injustice of five boys who stand up against an entire system in order to write their names, or whether it’s something like origin, considers humanity as a whole. Indians, Nazis, black people in the American South, and how it all fits together. I think storytelling comes in all forms, and I’m lucky to be able to tell the stories I want to tell.
Like you said, storytelling comes in all forms, and so does inspiration. Where do you get most of your inspiration from and is there anything you tend to go back to?
I’m inspired by everything. One of my family members used to say, “If you’re bored, you’re bored.” The world is just alive, full of color, full of experiences, and everyone has a story. Everyone you meet has some kind of story, something that changed them, and that could illuminate something for you. Whether it’s looking at art, reading (even art), just sitting and talking to someone, or going for a walk in nature. In all of those moments, a story pops into my head and I get excited about what I get to do and feel lucky to be able to do it. I started making films much later in life, when most people had already decided what they were going to do. I changed jobs late, so I don’t take it for granted and I appreciate it all the more.
