(Reuters) – Internet service provider TPG Telecom Ltd. became the latest Australian company to fall victim to a high-profile cyberattack, saying on Wednesday the emails of up to 15,000 business customers had been accessed.
At least eight Australian companies have gone public about their hacks since October, sparking public outrage and the government last week announcing it was developing a new cybersecurity strategy to deal with the threat. We are also considering banning ransom payments to cybercriminals.
TPG, Australia’s second largest internet service provider with 7.2 million accounts, said the main purpose of the hack of its hosted exchange services was to retrieve customers’ cryptocurrency and financial information. The company’s cybersecurity advisor, his Mandiant, discovered the breach during a historical forensic review.
The company said it was taking steps to stop unauthorized access and was contacting all customers of its exchange services affected by the incident.
