Athing Mu has a running resume that many top athletes strive to achieve throughout their careers. The 20-year-old’s rise to the top of the running world is nothing short of a meteoric one.
In 2021, the former Texas A&M standout shattered several collegiate running records, turned pro as a college freshman, and broke the US record for the first time in 53 years in the women’s 800 meters (nearly half a mile). Although her 2022 season was cut short due to her COVID-19, Mu set her world-leading time of 1:57.01 at her marquee event last month. In other words, a brisk walking pace is about 4 miles per hour. Mu won the race at about 15 mph.
Since the Tokyo Olympics, the star of the middle distance has adjusted to a new career as a professional runner and the challenges that come with it, including increased pressure and media attention. To meet these new challenges, Mu tried to do things his own way by maintaining a routine that worked best for him. She simplifies the process by focusing on each competition at once.
“I’m not trying to be anything other than myself,” she tells SELF. “I’m just going to be the athlete of the past year and change a little bit.”
As much as Mu is dedicated to running fast, he takes recovery and his bedtime routine seriously. Like so many athletes, she also believes proper sleep, relaxation and downtime are essential to success on and off the track. During his high school years, he was unable to prioritize everything he needed to do as an athlete.
“I didn’t have time to be myself. We were always together,” she says. “Now I have my own space and I can choose what I want to do. That’s probably why my routine has changed.”
