Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo made a magical duo at the LA premiere of Wicked on Saturday, wearing Thom Browne and Louis Vuitton, respectively, and chatted with Extra’s Melvin Robert.
The two explained the meaning behind their appearance.
Cynthia said, “Tonight was about skin, so it was actually about Elphaba’s greenery and skin, and I wanted to pick out the details that she had, so tonight I also added some freckles.”
Ariana said: “We were playing Dorothy, a little Glinda-esque, with jeweled shoes and a nod to L. Frank Baum’s original story, not ruby slippers. Because it’s not what it is,” he said. (In the original, they were silver slippers.)
The two talked about singing together, how Cynthia wanted Ariana to write only her own vocals, and the process of piecing together the best songs from different vocal takes.
“When we were rehearsing and actually comping the soundtrack, we were in the studio together, and no one knew she was like a technical genius and could edit and comp the vocals. I didn’t realize it. I trust her and she has the best ears, so she put together a compilation of my vocals.
Ali said with a smile. “Having a Pro Tools session full of Cynthia Erivo takes is heaven on earth because it’s just fun and they’re all perfect. It’s a matter of what perfection you want. So it was.” It’s really fun for me. ”
He also talked about his challenge to the famous songs “Defying Gravity” and “Popular.” Melvin asked Cynthia what she knew about the idea of defying gravity on the other side of this project.
Cynthia recalled: “Oh, what do I know about defying gravity? It takes a lot of effort and courage, but it feels so good when you do it.”
Ali said: “What do you know about popularity that you didn’t know before?” I think kindness is the most important thing, and laughter is the most important thing, and that’s what really makes you the most popular I’ll make it. ”
Ariana talked about wanting to take care of the character Glinda, and how Glinda ended up taking care of herself as well.
She said: “There are so many strange, similar, traumas and pains that we’ve all experienced. Many times in my life, I’ve felt really isolated within myself. I think, you know, it’s a little more specific, but there was a lot of love and support around me.
She continued, “But I think it was necessary for me to play a character who doesn’t feel alone among them because they are similar and her strength was what I needed. [Cynthia’s] Strength and Glinda’s strength is what I really needed in my life and yes, it was really healing for so many reasons. ”
Melvin brought up “Wicked: Part 2,” which will be released in a year, and asked, “What do you hope people will see?”
Cynthia admitted, “I’m so excited to see their growth, where their friendship reaches and how it deepens. And we look hot too!”
Ariana wrote, “I love your smokey eye in movie 2. I’m so excited for people to see Elphaba’s smokey eye in movie 2. Looks like Elphaba performing at the Billboard Music Awards. But you know what I mean? With her rock band.”
“Wicked” will be released on November 22nd.
