The Arena Football League is officially back.
The AFL announced Wednesday that it will officially return in 2024.
The league, which recently closed in 2019, features 16 teams and plays a 10-game season. The details of these teams are not yet known.
AFL President Anthony Rossi said in a statement: “We are delighted to come out of hibernation and officially announce this announcement.” It was about reviving the brand, we were envisioned doing the old saying “bigger, better”, but this time it’s streaming, betting, technology, virtual reality, good old fashioned iron. We want to incorporate the components of modern business, such as immersive fan engagement mixed with humans. Football…we believe we have assembled a world-class operating team comprised of executive management, professional sports trainers, football officials, performance facilities, legal partners, professional team owners and former athletes. ”
The AFL played its first season in 1987. After the 2009 season was canceled due to financial problems, it resumed in 2010. The Albany Empire won the ArenaBowl that season.
The league is the latest spring soccer league to surface or resurface in recent years. Last spring, the US Football League was revived. The XFL is set to return again this month after Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson joins the ownership group following his final attempt in 2020.
