You’ve probably seen the satisfying video of a chiropractor giving you a quick turn around your neck or back and getting instant relief.
People tend to go to chiropractors to relieve pain and improve mobility, especially in the back, neck, and joints. But what happens when a treatment that is supposed to improve pain only causes permanent damage?
Man Permanently Injured by The Joint Chiropractor
In a viral video that has been viewed more than 1.9 million times, popular TikToker Tyler Stanton shared his unfortunate story to warn others.
“PSA: Don’t go to the chiropractor,” Stanton said in a text overlay.
Stanton explained last year that he was working hard to be in the best shape of his life by his 33rd birthday. On June 28, 2024 (the day before his birthday), Stanton visited a chiropractor at Joint, a national chain with more than 950 locations nationwide, to deal with tension in his mid-back.
When the chiropractor was adjusting Stanton, they had some difficulties because Stanton was very stiff and he was also “big”. With his back, they tried again with more force and were able to untie it.
The same thing happened to his neck, and Stanton felt Cairo applying significant force behind the rotation of his neck.
“I heard a loud, painful pop. I knew right away something was wrong,” Stanton said.
“The whole right side of my body felt like it was still.”
When he tried to sit down, the whole room spun and he was sweating profusely (just like he does before throwing up). He had to lie on the chiropractor’s table for 30 minutes before he felt okay enough to walk out the door.
However, as soon as he returned home, he became “severely unwell” and threw up “uncontrollably”.
Stanton was hoping he could go to sleep and feel better in the morning, but when he tried to hit the snooze button on his phone, he realized something was very wrong.
“I was in the worst pain I’ve ever experienced in my life,” Stanton said. “…it felt like the entire right side of my body was still.”
“It was really scary,” he said.
Stanton called a friend to take him to the hospital. I spent several weeks in the hospital on and off, trying to relieve the pain with epidural injections (which didn’t relieve the pain) and trying to figure out what was wrong. .
What was wrong with him?
Doctors told Stanton that the chiropractor had caused a C6 hernia. (A herniated disc means that the normally protected soft center of the spine has slipped into the outer ring, putting pressure on the nerves. spine information
Stanton was presented with two treatment options.
spinal fusion The vertebrae are replaced with synthetic vertebrae and fused together. “When I looked at the visual he drew for me, I almost threw up, so it’s a no-no. Plus, that surgery, especially when people have to redo it over and over again. I’ve heard so many horror stories…I don’t want to spend the rest of my life having neck surgery.”
physical therapy This is to manage your pain and see if you can live with your herniated disc. That was the option he chose, they sent him home with medicine at the pharmacy and he had to rest for another two months.
During that time, Stanton was unable to work and her savings “evaporated.”
Will he sue The Joint?
At first, Stanton didn’t even want to consider suing the chiropractor. Although he had given Stanton penetrating damage, Stanton thought it wouldn’t be so bad if he could regain his mobility and live with the pain. Plus, he found out it was an accident.
“I don’t think you should be chasing someone’s livelihood,” Stanton said.
But even after months of physical therapy, Stanoton still struggles with pain and is limited in what he can physically do.
“Emotionally, financially, physically, everything was destroyed,” he said.
He said Stanton felt he had no choice but to file a lawsuit, even though he felt morally conflicted.
“This really derailed my entire life overnight, even though I did nothing wrong,” he said.
But even after contacting about 10 lawyers, all of them are too scared to take on the case because they say it is very difficult to win a case against Cairo.
“What happened to me and what I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy,” Stanton said.
“I just wanted to share this story, so I hope someone sees the ti and takes it as a warning. For example, don’t go to the chiropractor, if something happens , because there’s not much you can do,” Stanton warned.
Stanton said in a follow-up video that several experts recommended that she continue to find a lawyer to take the case.
In an emailed response, the community said:
“At The Joint Chiropractic, the safety of our patients and staff, and the integrity of the service we provide, is always our top priority. Due to HIPAA, we do not have the freedom to share personal health information of potential patients. .”
