At WWDC 2022 in June, Apple Preview next-gen CarPlaypromises deeper integration with vehicle features such as A/C and FM radio, support for multiple displays across the dashboard, personalization options, and more.
According to Apple, the first vehicles to support the next-generation CarPlay experience will be unveiled in the second half of 2023, with enthusiasts from Acura, Audi, Ford, Honda, Jaguar, Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Porsche, Volvo and more. A maker will be announced. In advance, we’ve rounded up his five key features to expect from the new version of CarPlay.
Multi-display support
A new version of CarPlay appears on all displays in the car, providing a consistent experience across the infotainment system, instrument cluster and additional screens on the dashboard. According to Apple, CarPlay will be adjusted for each new vehicle model to accommodate its unique screen shape and layout.
Instrument cluster integration
The new CarPlay experience offers integration with the vehicle’s instrument cluster, including speedometer, tachometer, odometer, fuel gauge, engine temperature, oil pressure gauges, and more. According to Apple, drivers will be able to choose from several gauge designs and layouts for his cluster, including brand-specific options.
climate control
You can now access your vehicle’s climate controls directly within the new version of CarPlay, adjusting air conditioning or heating temperature, fan speed, heated seats, heated steering wheel, and other options.
widget
Widgets are an integral part of the new CarPlay experience, providing at-a-glance information such as trip duration, gas mileage, mileage, calendar events, weather, phone calls, HomeKit-enabled garage door status, and more. You can also view and scroll through widgets in the instrument cluster.
fm radio app
The new version of CarPlay includes an all-new radio app that lets you easily control the FM radio in your car, including changing stations.
