Anna Kendrick talks to Extra’s Melvin Robert about her new crime thriller, “Woman of the Hour,” based on the true story of the so-called dating game killer.
In addition to starring, Anna is also making her directorial debut, and describes the prospect of filming as “really scary, but also really exciting.”
After getting the job, Kendrick said: I was like, “I just have to keep going.” ”
Anna revealed that she asked A Simple Favor director Paul Feig for advice. “I have a lot of respect for him as a filmmaker and collaborator, and I love the way he works.”
She added: “He’s like the nicest guy in Hollywood and we all know that, but he told me, ‘From now on, it’s your responsibility, you’re going to pay for it.’ It was the first time someone gave me tough love.” And I’m like, “I’m not going to make excuses.” ”
Kendrick also turned to New Girls director Jake Johnson, who was in the midst of making his directorial debut, Self-Reliance.
She said: “I would always call him and be like, ‘Okay, how’s the editing going?'” What should I expect? …What’s the sound mix like? ”
Anna’s Pitch Perfect co-star Brittany Snow was also working on her directorial debut, Parachute, so Kendrick called her to give her a pep talk.
“I also called her, like a true lover’s pep talk, and she gave me some tough love. And she literally said, ‘Anna, you’re going to be on set. I think he said, ‘Well, you’ll know what to do.'”
There was no “intense encouragement.” Instead, Anna said, “Brittany talked to me the same way I always talk. It was exactly the kind of thing I wanted to hear.”
Anna also said, “I was drawn to the way this script uses this serial killer’s background, especially the fact that he was on a dating show, as a way to explore themes like everyday life. ” he said. This is a survival tactic that women often use. ”

Kendrick said the film follows her character, Cheryl, and is “imagined a week in the life of an aspiring actress in Hollywood in the ’70s,” adding, “Every scene is different for her. The questions that come up, especially the first act when we start getting to know her, are like, “Do you see me as a person or something else?” Is it something? And when you get an answer, there’s a kind of perverse sense of relief that may not be a good one. ”
She also inserted a scene taken from her own experience at the beginning of the film. Anna described it as Cheryl at the audition, “where they specifically mentioned my body and basically said things that happened when I was 19.” said.
“Woman of the Hour” will be available on Netflix on October 18th.
