Raleigh, North Carolina — WRAL’s 5 On Your Side reports throughout the year on fraud, blackmail, and how malicious actors attempt to deceive others, abuse trust, and extort money.
But there are good people in the world, and after sharing the loss of a single mother who tried to buy a virtual reality headset for her son, dozens reached out.
Within 24 hours of the story airing on WRAL-TV, people reached out for help via phone calls, emails and direct messages. A Good Samaritan, who wished to remain anonymous, called to offer to purchase the quest.
5 On Your Side has established a connection.
Lee said the WRAL has agreed to provide her address to the donor and the gift is in preparation. It should arrive in time for her son to open on Christmas morning.
“I just want to hug him no matter who he is,” Lee said.
Still, Lee lost $280 because he used a cash app to pay. Many apps do not offer payment protection and there is no way to reverse charges. Venmo provides that protection. Click to activate before sending payment. It costs the seller a few cents or dollars, but if you don’t get what you paid for, you can get your money back.
