Indie broker and Inman contributor Troy Palmquist shared the stage with eXp Realty Chief Growth Officer Michael Valdez at the Inman Connect real estate conference in Las Vegas in August. It was billed as a candid conversation about recruiting and retaining talent in the securities industry.
Little did Palmquist know that he himself was being recruited.
Mr. Palmquist announced in a call with Mr. Inman on Wednesday that he has joined eXp as director of growth in California. He also plans to transfer his 30-member team from Doora Properties, which previously supported the brokerage firm’s operations, to eXp from Side.
The origins of the movement can be traced directly to the Las Vegas stage, he said.
“I had a good conversation with him [Valdes] A lot of the things he said on stage and off stage really resonated,” Palmquist told Inman. “We continued to communicate, we continued to have conversations, and I really liked everything I heard. And that then gave me the opportunity to work on the growth side of eXp.”
In his new role at eXp, Mr. Palmquist will provide support and information services to agents across the state and help them grow their business through recruiting and other means.
All but a few agents at Palmquist’s brokerage firm told him they were planning to move to eXp. One or two people are still mulling their decisions, he said.
In the meantime, the independent brokerage he founded early last year will continue to operate as Doora Properties. He hopes the switch will benefit agents as well, opening up more opportunities for networking and professional education.
Mr. Palmquist informed Mr. Said early Wednesday that he would be leaving the platform and began the process of taking over his brokerage duties. He told Inman that his reason for leaving was not due to dissatisfaction with the side, but that he could not afford to miss out on eXp’s opportunity.
“We really felt like it would be a better platform for our team to grow,” Palmquist said. “And an opportunity like this is truly a once-in-a-lifetime thing. I think my career was on a good trajectory leading up to this, and it really felt right.”
